Comparing Resources

I numbered these on a 1-10 scale, 10 being the best.

A summary of what's good about each site, and my preferences: I really liked Ebsco-- it had the most results that worked with my topic! All I had to do was type in my search term, and it spit out a ton of valid, important results (that I then emailed to myself.) Opposing viewpoints wasn't really the best search tool for my non-controversial topic... "sleep deprivation vs. mood" doesn't have many arguable points. Points of View was my second- favorite, because of the relevance of the articles I found. All in all, I got about eight resources for my project!

Opposing Viewpoints

When I searched for Sleep Deprivation under subject and keywords, I got the same results. The recommended terms didn't help, as the only other term was sleep deprivation.

When I typed in "Mood and Sleep Deprivation", only three results showed up, but two of them had really good information about studies that have been done.

I definitely noticed a difference between Google and OV! With Google, you type in a term and get six million responses. You then have to sift through all those results to get maybe 50 good articles. With OV, on the other hand, you type in a term and get six pre-filtered results. I think both resources are useful! However, I think I would use more of Google, because I can get to it easier and there are so many results.

Website Validity

Pacific Tree Octopus Site: INVALID. http://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus/faq.html

Reasons: One, there is no such THING as a tree octopus. They can't exist, since octopi need water to survive! Plus, one of the pictures distinctly features a stuffed animal perched in a tree. See the picture below... Also, there is a quote from the site that reads "Sasquatch have been gathering Tree Octopuses since before Humans settled in their habitats. They form a symbiotic relationship. We value our limbs and don't question this." References to mythical creatures don't really add to their validity.

Scorcher Movie Site: INVALID. http://www.scorchermovie.com/

Reasons: If the movie was out in winter of 2008, we would be hearing a lot about it right now. Also, I looked it up online, and there wasn't a single reference to a movie. When I tried to click on the trailer, it didn't exist. Odd... there weren't really any pictures, but i tried to bring the trailer. No results. :(

Zombie Site: INVALID. http://www.archaeology.org/online/features/hierakonpolis/zombies.html

Reasons: Well, for one, I was skimming the text and found this. "This could make sense if the palette refers to a victory over zombie forces. Perhaps Narmer wielded a large Nile catfish, Clarias?, grasping the tail and using it as a sort of black jack to stun the zombies, then removed their heads with a chisel. It is an attractive idea. " Anything that discusses zombie victories has to be looked at twice... Plus, if the site wanted to be taken seriously, they probably wouldn't put in pictures like this.

Research Tech Test

I got this picture from AP Images under "Girl Playing Volleyball." I play a lot of volleyball each week, and this represents the psychotic amount of practicing we do and all the emphasis placed on sports. Here's the link: http://accuweather.ap.org/cgi-bin/fastlight.pl?+Intl_Photos+8924224+accuweather.ap.org%3A80+++++New_putmenu3+

THIS picture was also from AP Images, under "Homework." This is the only one that looked like it represented anything involving homework, though. So... much... homework... The link: http://accuweather.ap.org/cgi-bin/fastlight.pl?+Intl_Photos+32838731+accuweather.ap.org%3A80+++++New_putmenu2+

Again, i used AP Images under "Sleeping" to find this adorable picture. This is totally me!!! I have needed a bunch of sleeeeep lately, but-alas- have been getting less and less. Tourism

I wasn't able to find a whole lot on the committee requirement, but I did go to the Tulip Festival site (www.tulipfestival.org) since the Tulip Festival's one of LC's main events. I think one good piece of information to convince people to be on the committee is this-- the entire month of April is devoted to the festival! Kind of insane, if you ask me, but there you go.

For my next piece of info, I searched "LA CONNER TOURISM" in Google. It did not turn up a whole lot. However, I did find the La Conner Chamber of Commerce site. I think this is a good site, because it isn't just some random blog that could say anything. It's the official site!!!

The Project

In between being totally confused with all this new technology stuff, I have been attempting to do my CBA. I think I will be scrambling at the last minute to get everything doneeeee. I don't know what last week's post was, so i will have to find that out. I have a lot of questions, but i guess they will have to wait until history. Thankfully, I work well under pressure, and have been known to pull projects out of nowhere. I might end up using Pageflakes to organize my topics for the CBA... the topic may switch from Calico Cupboard if I can't find anybody to interview. We'll see.
